Why investigate media strategy? – Implications of social media.

Social media has revolutionised the way that information is created, distributed and shared. Innovative communications practitioners have been quick to see the possibilities of new media forms, some with great success. The size of the audience which can be reached through social media has rapidly increased over the past five years and continues to expand and evolve with open-source development and co-operation. The following video gives some statistics around some of the latest social media technologies.

Statistics don’t answer the question the video poses (Is social media a fad?), as Andrew Davies of Tipping Point Labs explains. But they are certainly intimidating and offer significant opportunity to those who understand how to make this media work for them. As a part of our thesis, we will explore how the relationship between media and an individual can affect the receptivity of a message, and some of the opportunities social media provides through our fourth focus area.
